In late Edo period of Japan, a vassal of the Akashi Domain named Tosho Mamiya (Masaaki Uchino ) commits suicide in front of the gate of Roju, the family of Lord Doi (Mikijiro Hira). By his suicide, he accuses the lord of Akashi Domain, Naritsugu Matsudaira (Goro Inagaki), with committing atrocities like murder & rape. Naritsugu Matsudaira, who is the younger brother of the shogun Ieyoshi, is set to become the Roju next year. The Shogun clan becomes disturbed by the case and believes the country's stability & peace is threatened by Naritsugu Matsudaira. Lord Doi then decides to assassinate Naritsugu Matsudaira and orders samurai Shinzaemon Shimada (Koji Yakusho) to carry out the deed.

Shinzaemon Shimada gathers eleven men, including a butcher ronin named Kuzuro Hirayama (Tsuyoshi Ihara) & Shinzaemon Shimada's own nephew Shinrokuro Shimada (Takayuki Yamada), who is a gambler, alcoholic and womanizer. As their plan progresses, Naritsugu Matsudaira's head samurai Hanbei Onigashira (Masachika Ichimura) hears of the assassinaton plan. Years ago, Hanbei Onigashira & Shinzaemon Shimada were fellow pupils of the sword, but ideological differences led them to part ways. Now, a mental battle between Hanbei Onigashira & Shinzaemon Shimada begins.

Shinzaemon Shimada believes the only way to assassinate Naritsugu Matsudaira is to ambush him in the town of Ochlai, while he is returning home from Edo. The assassins are dispatched to Ochlai to fortify the town and lay traps. During this time the assasins pick up a 13th member, a mountain man named Koyata Saga (Yusuke Iseya).

When the 13 assassins' plan is set to begin, they encounter many surprises, none of which is bigger than facing an army of more than 200 samurais

"A Better Tomorrow" is a remake of the 1986 film "A Better Tomorrow" by John Woo, it's a co-production between South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan. Kim Hyuk (Joo Jin-Mo) lives the fast life as a high ranking mobster in the port city of Busan, South Korea. His closet friend is fellow mobster Lee Young-Choon (Song Seung-Heon). Even though Kim Hyuk seems to be on top of the world, he is haunted by the memory of leaving behind his younger brother Kim Chul (Kim Kang-Woo) and mother as they attempted to flee into South Korea from North Korea. Kim Hyuk's mother was beaten to death and Kim Chul imprisoned after they were caught by North Korean authorities.

Kim Hyuk then travels to Thailand with new gang recruit Jung Tae-Min (Jo Han-Seon) for a meeting with Thai gangsters. The meeting turns out to be a set-up, planned in part by Jung Tae-Min. Kim Hyuk is able to shoot his way out the meeting, but he is later caught by the Thai police and imprisoned. When good friend Lee Young-Choon hears of what happened to Kim Hyuk in Thailand, he goes to the Thai gang's holdout in Pusan to kill their boss. During the shootout Jung Tae-Min is shot in the leg.

Three years later, Kim Hyuk is finallly released from prison and travels back to Busan. He finds his close friend Lee Young-Choon washing cars now and has a limp leg. Jung Tae-Min, the man that betrayed him, has climbed up the mob ranks and is now a feared crime boss. Furthermore, Kim Hyuk's younger brother Kim Chul has arrived in Busan and works for the Busan Police Department. Meanwhile, Kim Chul keeps close tabs on Jung Tae-Min as he attempts to take down their gang.

When Jung Tae-Min attempts to take out Kim Hyuk's younger brother, Kim Hyuk throws himself back into the gang world to exact revenge

S I N O P S I S

Tahun 690 sebelum Masehi adalah zaman keemasan negeri China. Saat itu yang berkuasa adalah Kaisar Wu Zetian (Carina Lau), satu-satunya kaisar wanita yang pernah berkuasa di negeri China. Tepat saat Kaisar Wu akan dinobatkan, peristiwa aneh tiba-tiba saja menyelimuti ibukota dan hanya Di Renjie (Andy Lau) saja yang mungkin bisa mengungkap misteri ini. Sayangnya Di Renjie sedang berada di pengasingan.

Delapan tahun sebelumnya Kaisar Wu Zetian terpaksa mengasingkan Di Renjie karena penyelidik yang satu ini menentang sang kaisar. Kini, saat ibukota diliputi misteri kematian beberapa orang yang dekat dengan kaisar, Wu Zetian tak punya pilihan lain selain memanggil Di Renjie. Misteri ini harus diungkap sebelum Wu Zetian naik tahta atau hal itu tak akan pernah terjadi.

Misteri kematian beberapa orang dekat istana ini juga tak pernah diduga oleh siapa pun. Segala persiapan untuk penobatan Wu Zetian sudah dilakukan. Untuk memastikan misinya menguasai negeri China berhasil, Juet Mou San (Simon Yam) menangkap semua pendekar di negeri ini agar tak ada orang yang bisa menghalangi niatnya lagi. Di antara para pendekar yang berhasil ditangkap Juet Mou San ini adalah Bou Keng Wan (Aaron Kwok) dan Mou Ming (Kenny Ho).

Untungnya, di tengah ketidakberdayaan ini, Nip Fung (Ekin Cheng) datang memberikan pertolongan. Ketiga pendekar ini pun lantas bertarung melawan Juet Mou San namun ternyata ketiganya bukanlah tandingan sang kaisar yang bengis. Terpaksa ketiganya lari menyelamatkan diri meski Chu Chu (Tang Yan), kekasih Bou Keng Wan harus terluka parah.

Meski sudah kalah namun Bou Keng Wan yang berjuluk Pendekar Awan dan Nip Fung yang bergelar Pendekar Angin tetap menyimpan dendam. Sadar bahwa ia tak akan bisa mengimbangi kesaktian sang kaisar, Nip Fung pun lantas memilih mempelajari ilmu hitam dengan harapan bisa mendapat kekuatan dengan cara instan.

Tak berapa lama kemudian , Nip Fung dan Bou Keng Wan kembali harus bertemu Juet Mou San dan terlibat pertempuran sengit. Belakangan baru diketahui bahwa sebenarnya ada satu barang yang diincar Juet Mou San dan barang itu tersimpan di bawah istana kekaisaran China. Bila Juet Mou San bisa mendapatkan barang itu maka tak bisa dihindarkan lagi, China akan jatuh ke tangan Juet Mou San.

Tidak biasanya dua sutradara kembar, Danny Pang dan Oxide Pang membuat film bertema martial arts seperti THE STORM WARRIORS ini. Sutradara kembar kelahiran Hong Kong yang mulai dikenal publik film barat lewat film THE MESSENGERS di tahun 2007 ini memang identik dengan film-film bertema horor dan thriller. Tapi usaha untuk menjajal lahan lain ini sepertinya tidak sia-sia karena THE STORM WARRIORS memang satu film yang menarik.

Secara garis besar, THE STORM WARRIORS ini terdiri dari dua alur cerita. Yang pertama jelas adalah kisah perseteruan antara dua pendekar, Bou Keng Wan dan Nip Fung dengan Juet Mou San sementara alur kedua berkisah tentang usaha Nip Fung mengalahkan Juet Mou San dengan cara mempelajari ilmu hitam. Sayangnya secara keseluruhan sang sutradara sepertinya lebih 'berpihak' pada alur pertama padahal sebenarnya alur kedua ini lebih punya potensi menjadi 'besar'.Cerita film ini sebenarnya sangat sederhana dan tidak menjanjikan banyak hal tapi sepertinya memang bukan itu tujuan dari sang sutradara. Pembentukan karakter lebih bersifat visual dan ini sangat menguntungkan karena secara dialog, naskah yang ditulis oleh Ma Wing Shing sepertinya kurang kokoh terutama pada penyusunan dialog. Untungnya, sisi CGI benar-benar mendapat perhatian penuh. Bukan cuma bagus dan terlihat realistik tapi efek spesial yang mewarnai adegan tarung film ini memang terlihat sangat efektif.
